Taking time to feel centered and in alignment with your life's purpose begins with your personal mission statement. It is often helpful to re-visit, and revise your personal mission statement throughout your life. Especially during times of stress or change, it is a dynamic tool to re-gain control and feel more at ease in your circumstances.

Creating, utilizing and revising your mission statement helps you to clarify your purpose, and focus on what is truly important to you. Personal mission statements are in alignment with your values and purpose. It is a reminder of who you are at your core, and how you would like to show up in your day-to-day life. In the words of Steven Covey, “The principles you live by create the world you live in. So when you change the principles you live by, you can change your world. Your mission statement serves to summarize the principles you want to live by.”

Mission statements are similar to a compass. It gives you direction to sail on the right course. This is the course that will get you closer to your dreams. Without that compass, it is difficult to know how to get to where you would like to go. It also allows you to do your yearly, weekly and daily planning effectively. You can stay grounded in your core values and align with your short term and long term goals. Writing and revising a personal mission statement allows you to discover and remember your sense of purpose in life.

Taking the time to think consciously about who you are, and where you want to go in your life provides a sense of meaning. Having a mission statement is a source of excitement and inspiration. It also keeps you on track and reminds you of what you’re here for, in order to experience a fulfilling life.

When life becomes stressful, having a personal mission statement to refer to can help you see the bigger picture. It refocuses your attention to the ideal life that you are working towards. It helps you to realize that despite life's ups and downs, you do have a higher purpose. A personal mission statement also keeps you grounded in right choices, making decisions in a way that will help you to fulfill your life purpose. Because every decision is important, it helps to have your mission statement firmly embedded in your mind.

Life stresses are often relieved when you are living in a way that is authentic, and matches your core values. It gives you the inner harmony because you are living in integrity. This creates calm and a sense of peace, knowing you are being your best and authentic self. It frees you of living from other people's expectations. When life gets tough, or you feel stressed, focusing on your life's purpose will ensure that you are on your path towards a life you love living.

So take out a pen and paper, and enjoy your journey to a purposeful life.
